There’s no other way; if she doesn’t do this, if she doesn’t force Angel to feed from her even though he’s fighting her every step of the way, Buffy knows that he’ll die. The blood of a Slayer is the only cure, and with Faith now out of reach, that only leaves Buffy herself.

So she begs him, pleads with him, finally goads him into biting her, and it’s like nothing she’s ever felt in her life, a curious mix of pain and ecstasy.

Vampire fangs are sharp as razors. She feels Angel’s slice into her throat, feels him begin to suck, and the sensation tears through her body like every nerve ending is on fire. It should hurt, and it does, but it’s the sweetest pain she’s ever experienced, because this is Angel, the man she loves, drawing strength and life from her body.

She wants him to do it, gives herself up to him the way she did the one time they made love, and the pain piercing her brings tears to her eyes. She wants him to stop, and at the same time she doesn’t. If she has to sacrifice herself to save Angel, then so be it. That’s what love is, right? Caring more for another than you do for yourself…

They’re connected, and if she could, Buffy would hold on to Angel forever, never let him go, but the pain is intensifying, every blood vessel in her body burning as her lifeblood is steadily drained. One leg kicks out, an involuntary spasm, and a stab of agony shoots through her foot. Distantly she hears something break, but everything is beginning to blur at the edges. Her heart falters as she dimly feels Angel’s fangs withdraw. Is he okay? Did he take enough?

Darkness engulfs her.
