Summary: The way the shadows danced along the walls frightened her in the beginning but slowly they began to comfort her.

Her name was Luna. She was almost sure of it, though no one had called her that in some time.

The first strand of fairy lights had gone up in her bedroom. One small way to keep the darkness at bay. She hadn't been able to sleep without at least a little light on. Yet she felt funny about buying herself a nightlight. It was a bit too childish and she hadn't been a child for a long time.

The lights worked out so well that she'd gone on to hang them in all the rooms of her apartment. Now they were the only lights she used, except for the occasional scented candle or two. It felt right.

The way the shadows danced along the walls frightened her in the beginning but slowly they began to comfort her. Over time they began to whisper to her and eventually they'd become her friends. Her only friends.

The day a shadow separated itself from the rest and became a cat Luna hadn't even blinked. It seemed like a perfectly normal evolution of things. He was her cat. Cosmos. She hadn't named him. She didn't have to. He was happy to tell her his name himself.

She couldn't remember when she stopped leaving the apartment. She never really wanted to leave before and when mysterious food deliveries started finding their way to her doorstep and money appeared in her account, she didn't question it. She just stayed home. It was what they wanted her to do.

It was early on that she started sleeping the days away. The night was her time now. She craved the darkness. She craved her shadow companions. Daylight brought only pain. Sometimes when the sun conspired to keep her awake a pill would appear by her bed. She always took it and sleep always followed.

Her old life was faded now. She could barely remember what came before. Before the shadows. She belonged to them and that was what mattered now. The only thing.
