Summary: “Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji interrupts him. Wei Ying is growing tense again in his arms and Lan Wangji cannot have that. “You love your job.”

“Do I, though?” Wei Ying asks, though they both know he’s not looking for an answer. “Do I, really?”

“Hold me, Lan Zhan!”

One minute Lan Wangji is chopping carrots and the next he has an armful of a squirmy and exhausted Wei Ying. He shivers when Wei Ying’s cold nose presses against the side of his neck, but he doesn’t hesitate before putting the knife down and wrapping his arms around his husband.

Lan Wangji slides a hand up and down Wei Ying’s back until he starts relaxing, little by little. “Wei Ying.”

“I’m okay,” Wei Ying mumbles. “Just…”

“Tired?”

Wei Ying makes an agreeable noise and tightens his grip on the back of Lan Wangji’s sweater. “The kids are fine. I love the kids! I love teaching them and I love when they interrupt Zoom class so they can show me their cats.”

“Hm.”

Lan Wangji has had the fortune of catching glimpses of some of those cats before. Wei Ying uses their office space to teach and, sometimes, Lan Wangji also needs to be there due to his own work from home situation. The cats are cute.

The way Wei Ying’s face lights up when he sees the cats is cuter.

“But the staff meetings and reports and bullshit district policies that make no damn sen—”

“Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji interrupts him. Wei Ying is growing tense again in his arms and Lan Wangji cannot have that. “You love your job.”

“Do I, though?” Wei Ying asks, though they both know he’s not looking for an answer. “Do I, really?”

Lan Wangji pulls back just enough so he can rest their foreheads together. Wei Ying goes a little cross-eyed staring up at him.

Lan Wangji is unable to resist. He kisses Wei Ying, soft and sweet, and fights back a smile when Wei Ying goes pliant against him.

“You do,” Lan Wangji says against Wei Ying’s mouth.

Wei Ying sighs and steals another kiss. “I love rest more, I think.”

Lan Wangji’s lips twitch up at that. “I’ll draw you a bath.”

“Lan Zhan!” Wei Ying gasps and then slumps even further into Lan Wangji’s arms. “I don’t think I have the energy for sex right now.”

“Just a bath,” Lan Wangji assures him. “Then dinner. Then cuddles.”

The smile Wei Ying gives him, small and thankful, makes Lan Wangji’s heart skip a beat. “Cuddles, Lan Er-gege? How shameless of you!”

Lan Wangji pecks him on the lips just so he doesn’t have to answer. He also hooks his hands under Wei Ying’s thighs and lifts him up, letting himself feel smug when Wei Ying squeaks and then laughs.

He sets Wei Ying down on the counter while he gets the bath ready. Wei Ying watches him, eyes tired but bright, and catches Lan Wangji by the wrist before Lan Wangji makes to leave.

“Thank you,” Wei Ying says, leaning forward to brush his lips against Lan Wangji’s own.

“There is no need for thank yous.”

“I love you, then,” Wei Ying tells him. “Lan Zhan, ah, Lan Zhan, will you take that?”

“Mark your words,” Lan Wangji replies, but kisses him and adds, “I love you too. Dinner will be ready soon.”

Lan Wangji leaves Wei Ying to his bath and goes back to fixing them some dinner. The food is ready by the time Wei Ying comes out of the bathroom with his hair up in a bun and dressed in red pajama pants and a too-big black t-shirt that shows off his collarbone. There is still a bruise there on the shape on Lan Wangji’s mouth from last night.

“Smells good,” Wei Ying comments as he hugs Lan Wangji from behind and smacks a kiss to his cheek. “I’ll grab the plates.”

There is no talking while eating, but Lan Wangji doesn’t stop Wei Ying from nudging his foot against Lan Wangji’s under the table. They eat quickly and in companionable silence and Wei Ying doesn’t complain once when it’s time for him to wash the dishes.

“Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan.” Wei Ying plasters himself to Lan Wangji’s side after the last bowl is put away. “You promised me.”

“Hm.” Lan Wangji grabs Wei Ying by the hand and leads them both to the living room. “I did promise.”

Wei Ying flashes him a grin when he pushes Lan Wangji down on the couch and flops down on top of him. He moves and squirms around until he’s settled between Lan Wangji’s thighs with his head on Lan Wangji’s chest and Lan Wangji’s arms around him.

“Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying sighs, “hold me tighter.”

Lan Wangji obliges.

Wei Ying falls asleep in that position one episode into the nature documentary they’re watching. Lan Wangji watches him, heart full, and holds his husband tight.
