DAWNING

Lan Zhan once asked why he liked to sit upon roofs. Of course, poetry littered roofs with lovers standing watch, but Wei Ying was not given to openly romantic gestures. He only shrugged, beginning an animated description of his latest experiment.

Now Lan Zhan awoke, alone in the moon-washed room, watching shadow snowflakes float across silk. Grabbing their quilt, he slid open the door and drifted up to the snow-draped roof. There, he tenderly gathered Wei Ying into his lap, enfolding them both, and tilting a drowsing head to his shoulder.

Dawning came, clear, on soft sunlight and sweet kisses.
