Summary: Immortal perspective -- the more things change...



One of the oddities (and amazements, it must be said) of the modern world was the sheer variety of materials from which things might be made. All the different immortals/very long-lived peoples agreed on this, if on few other points. (Of course they knew of each other -- the different kinds of vampires, the lightning-immortals, the elves, the old guard, the people who, for whatever reason, simply did not die -- how could they not?) Foil, for example, aluminum, titanium, exotic alloys used in space (space!), which had astonishing applications. Then there were the remarkable things that were extrapolations of ideas many of the older ones had known in their youth, such as snowboards (skis, skates and snowshoes had been invented and re-invented many, many times), contact lenses (a clever advancement on crystal and glass lenses), for example. On the other hand, bread had, at base, changed very little, except in the general lack of stone-grit in the flour. But now one could partake in so very many different kinds, shapes, tastes and flour-sources. (And beer, of course. Where one had bread, there also was beer: Yeast-fermented beverage, of grain, fruit, honey, always a wonder.) Bread and beer: the true Prize.
