Eleanor was not afraid of the sea. No one on Nassau, even those who never left the island, could possibly fear it. But she could not account for the dreams that submerged her in saltwater every night, filling her lungs and dragging her to the depths. Somehow she felt the tide rise out of papers on her desk, the streams trickling down from the fort, and every ship brought a towering wave with it as it docked. Standing at her bedroom window, she willed the sea to stay in its bed as she climbed into hers, but still, it came.
