"It is time that we found a husband for Acsah,” Caleb’s wife told him.

“Yes, I suppose it is,” Caleb replied.  “But who will we find to take her off our hands?  She’s far more feisty than either of her sisters were, at least their husbands knew they were taking on a safe wife.”

“So, find someone who is more inclined to take a risk,” she said.

“Actually that’s not such a bad idea,” Caleb agreed.  “I really need someone to capture Kiriath-sepher.  What if I offer Acsah as a prize?”

“An excellent idea,” his wife said.  Caleb wondered if he was being manipulated.

Caleb was delighted when his nephew Othniel conquered Kiriath-sepher and took Acsah as his wife.  He now felt safe from any further demands his daughter might make, since in future she would be making them of her husband.

He should have known better.  A few months later he saw a donkey heading up the path towards his home, and riding on the donkey was Acsah.  He hurried out to see her.

“What’s the matter?” he asked.

“You gave me land in the Negev as my dowry, now I would like some springs of water to go with it, please,” Acsah replied.

“What does Othniel say?”

“I told him, and he was in complete agreement with me.”

Of course he was.  Caleb realised there was no safe alternative but to give her the upper and lower springs.  It was his own fault, he’d married his headstrong daughter to someone who was prepared to take risks, he would just have to live with the consequences.
