Dee stared up at the sky, a sour expression on his face.

“Full moon. That’s all we need; it’ll bring all the crazies out. So much for a nice, quiet night.”

Beside him, Ryo sighed. “Before I joined the force I used to think a full moon was romantic; then I was out on patrol one night and there was this guy running down the middle of the street stark naked. When we caught up and tried to arrest him he said he was a werewolf, and then he bit my partner. After that, all the romance went out of full moon nights.”

Dee laughed. “My first full moon as a cop, two middle-aged women got into a fight at a dinner party ‘cause they were both wearin’ the same dress. Dave and I were dispatched to handle it and by the time we got there the combatants had trashed their hosts’ dining room, one of them had knocked out her opponent’s front teeth, and the toothless woman retaliated by hitting her attacker over the head with a wine bottle. They both ended up in the hospital.”

Ryo glanced up at the moon, shining bright overhead. “We probably should’ve called in sick, left the craziness for someone else to deal with.”

“Bit late for that now; we’re already here.” Dee slouched his way through the main doors and up the stairs to the squad room, Ryo right behind him.

“Maybe we’re worrying over nothing and it’ll be okay.”

Dee snorted. “I wouldn’t count on it.”

“Pessimist.”

Hardly more than an hour later the two detectives found themselves up on the roof of a tenement arresting an irate man who’d been throwing his wife’s collection of porcelain figurines at passers by, claiming, “They’re possessed!” Whether he meant the figurines or the people he was aiming at was unclear, but it didn’t matter; they had him on destruction of property, wilful damage, and disturbing the peace, among other things. Whether the figurines constituted dangerous weapons was uncertain, but several people had been injured and wanted to press charges.

“It could be worse,” Ryo commented as the slapped the handcuffs on while the man continued to rant. “At least the only serious casualties are a few ornaments.”

“He’s never liked them,” the man’s wife said sadly. “He wanted a dog.”

Dee caught Ryo’s eye. “Full moon. Never fails does it?”

“I guess not.”
