The Old Guard: fanfic: a thousand cuts

Title: a thousand cuts
Fandom: The Old Guard
Rating: PG-rated
Length: 200 words (double drabble)
Notes: Joe/Nicky, backstory, immortality angst, battlefield angst. Much thanks to [personal profile] out_there for beta! <3
Summary: When you’re immortal, everyone else is a child.

A Mongol soldier trips, falls. A breath-pause in the battle. Yusuf’s sword points to his throat, drifts to his chest, all without making contact. The man’s already wounded, his eyes dark with pain.

Yusuf’s killed thousands of times, driven by duty, necessity or mercy. Humans are fragile and short-lived. Famine, disease—isn’t that enough?

The soldier gasps. There’s nothing special about him. He likely has children, even grandchildren, but Yusuf must be thrice his age by now. Everyone they kill is a child.

Knowing he’ll regret it, knowing it’s neither noble nor kind, he withdraws his sword. “What’s your name?”

Nicolo’s the only one left standing. He looks for Yusuf among the fallen, expecting to find him reawakening. Instead, sees him kneeling, cradling something.

Heart in his throat, Nicolo runs over. A minor skirmish like this shouldn’t have brought Yusuf to his knees, but his tears are glistening in the twilight, running into his beard.

There’s a dead Mongol in his lap. Everything smells of blood. Nicolo crouches to grip Yusuf’s shoulder. Closes the Mongol’s eyes.

“If I didn’t have you, I’d go mad.” It’s a broken confession.

Relieved, suffused with love, Nicolo can’t reply. Then, “You’ll always have me.”

*sighs happily* This is gorgeous for the way you balance detail and feeling; there's just enough of both to make it powerful and evocative. Brava!

Oh, wow. This is such a lovely thing, I adore fics that handle these aspects of immortality (and I'm so glad they have each other).

Oof that line! This was excellent.

Everyone they kill is a child.

Such a powerful sentence, for how short it is!

“You’ll always have me.”

Those two, those two

That was very evocative, I really enjoyed it, thank you for sharing :)

I love the style of this; the short, snappy sentences that put across that broken, disjointed feel of battle so beautifully. But then you've also really packed the emotional punch, especially into the second half.

Also, these two lines:

Everyone they kill is a child.
and
“If I didn’t have you, I’d go mad.” It’s a broken confession.

just capture the impacts of immortality really nicely.

This is just a really good example of working within a really tight word limit done right; nice work!

Thanks so much! I'm really happy the style worked for you. [community profile] multifandomdrabble got me started writing word-limited stuff, and now I can't stop! *g*

Oh man, I have a lot of time for people who can pull these types of short fics off - every time I try, I end up with at least 1,200 words (and usually something I intended to write that never made it into the final fic). I do still hopefully follow a couple of drabble comms (many of which come with awesome prompts, but I never actually manage to write within their word limits *laughs*

But yeah, this was good stuff :)

Ha! I mostly only do it for [community profile] multifandomdrabble, but then it starts spilling out into my other writing. The discipline is really fun -- I usually write long and then pare it back. (Admittedly, one of my MFD treats ended up being an 11-drabble sequence, which was... maybe not quite in the spirit of the thing. *g*)

every time I try, I end up with at least 1,200 words

Aw, that's great too! I do like the freedom to sink into the story without having to do the paring, and let it breath... :-D

I think the paring down ends up feeling too much like academic work for me, and then I find it frustrating. But it's definitely a skill!

I wrote two drabbles this year, but those were as a challenge to myself, so I kinda controlled the parametres, you know? As soon as I get started with other people's prompts, my brain goes "oh but we could just add..." and, lo, thousands of words result. I would totally be right there with you on the huge drabble series :D

Maybe that's why I like it. I don't have any other academic stuff to do. ;-)

This bit in particular: “If I didn’t have you, I’d go mad.” Just perfect.
