Smallville was my very first fandom -- or really, my entry point to fandom. But I didn't come into fandom because of the show itself; I was watching it for a while before the fannish bug hit me. But a friend sent me a link to a piece of fanfic, and I got hooked.

This is that story.

It condenses so much that I love about Smallville -- Lex's obsessive friendship with Clark, Clark's fascination with Lex and Lex's big-city sophistication, and the ways in which they do and don't trust each other. The Clark in this story is bumbling and awkward and daring and kind. Lex is prickly and outrageous and self-aware. They're both just such wonderfully complicated people, being complicated together.

I hadn't even watched a single episode of White Collar before this story crossed my reading list. I think the first episode had been released on Youtube; I know I went and watched it as soon as I read this.

This story is everything I wanted the show to be, and really colored everything that I wrote about it later when I actually joined the fandom. Peter's shades-of-grey relationship to the law, when it comes to the people he cares about. His and Elizabeth's fierce loyalty to each other. The craziness of everyone's feelings, considering the barriers between them.

In late 2018, one of my friends started talking about this Chinese drama, Guardian. I had no interest in watching the show at that point, but I poked at the fanfic. I mean, my friends were writing it, so why not?

And then this story came around. Magic powers, secrets, the extension of trust, love making people take risks... All my favorite things rolled into one! Add in characters who express their deepest emotions in unusual ways, and I was hooked.
