The second night Shen Wei spends at Zhao Yunlan’s flat—the first time in his bed—is unintentional. Lying naked together, both spent and still recovering their breath, Shen Wei shuts his eyes to savour it all: Zhao Yunlan pressed against his side, the musk of their bodies, even the old refrigerator’s hum.

When he opens his eyes, the apartment is bright with sunlight. “It’s morning,” he says, startled.

Zhao Yunlan, smug as a cat, snuggles closer, murmurs, “What a coincidence—this is a good-morning kiss!”

His lips find Shen Wei’s. They both grin. It’s a very good morning indeed.
