Breakfast was their thing.

Every morning, one of them would make their way to the other’s quarters. They would share their morning meal and discuss the latest news aboard the Enterprise. Afterwards, they’d head to their respective stations, she to Sick Bay, he to the Bridge, but not without the assurance that they would do it all again the next day.

Beverly had first suggested it to make sure that Jean-Luc ate something during the day. After all, it was her job as Chief Medical Officer to ensure the health of the crew, including the Captain.

The tradition held, however, because she realized that she had missed his company. Her first year on the Enterprise had been rocky. Trying to rebuild a friendship after ten years of absence had proved difficult. Then she’d got the position at Starfleet Medical where she spent the next year. It had been a great experience, but there was something about the Enterprise that kept calling to her.

After a year on Earth, Beverly was recalled to the Enterprise on the insistence of one Jean-Luc Picard. She had been pleasantly surprised. It had been her first week back that she’d suggested their breakfast meetings. Slowly, the relationship between the two had healed and now they were even better friends than they had been before.

This closeness had proved to be a blessing and a curse. Beverly cherished the triumphant return of their friendship, but lately, she had been feeling that she wanted more. When they’d first met, there had been an attraction between the two, but Beverly had tried to ignore it, as she was dating and later married his best friend. But now, almost twenty years later, that attraction had been rekindled.

Beverly was hesitant to act on it. She didn’t want to destroy the friendly relationship they had rebuilt after so long, but as the days went on and she could feel herself falling deeper and deeper for the stoic Captain of the Enterprise, she knew she’d have to take the chance.

They met for breakfast as usual. Today it was in his quarters. When Beverly arrived, he was coming from the replicator with two steaming cups of coffee. He smiled when he saw her, and she could feel her heart beat a little faster.

“Ah Beverly,” he said, “I’m glad you could make it.”

The two sat down at the table and began to eat. Jean-Luc began to discuss all the ongoing activities on the ship, but Beverly found she could hardly pay attention to the words he was saying. She was too busy looking at his lips, wondering how they would feel if she brushed them with her own.

“Beverly?”

She looked up and saw concern in the hazel eyes that she daydreamed about. He placed his hand on her arm and she nearly jumped at the electric feel of his touch.

“Are you alright?” he asked, “You seem a little distracted.”

“To tell you the truth Jean-Luc, I kind of was,” she admitted.

“Oh?” he questioned, raising an eyebrow, “What were you thinking about?”

Beverly could feel her heart fluttering in her chest and knew that it was now or never. She got up from her chair and moved closer to Jean-Luc’s side of the table until she was in front of him.

“Well, I was thinking about this.”

She leaned down and softly kissed the lips that had been distracting her. When she pulled back, she met the smiling gaze of Jean-Luc.

“I could see how that would be distracting,” he mused.

“Yes,” she replied with a grin, “Very distracting.”

Jean-Luc rose from his chair. He gently brushed a strand of hair out of her face and as he did, Beverly could see the pure adoration in his eyes.

“I’ve always thought so,” he murmured as he closed the gap between them.
