"So nice to see you boys getting along again," Peter's mum said.

Carl managed a bashful smile and a mumble, and passed their shared teacup back to Peter under her approving gaze.

"Sorry we didn't have milk for your tea," Peter said, kissing her goodbye on the doorstep. Carl gave her a hug, as he would even if she hadn't given them (him) a much-needed £50.

Oh well, Carl thought, surveying the mess that was their kitchen and pulling a piece of broken glass out of the sole of his shoe. At least they could buy some more crockery now.
