Title: one to remember, one to forget
Fandom: original
Rating: Teen
Length: 200 words
Content Notes: No major warnings apply - depressing tone.
Author notes: also written for @genprompt_bingo 's prompt: Identity Crisis (wild card)
Summary: a choice to be made

One cup of forgetfulness. One cup of remembrance. Does it all even out in the end?

She wasn't sure who she was anymore. Well, she certainly knew who other people thought she was. She just didn't know who she actually was; down to her core.

She pushed aside a stray lock that had broken free from the loose braid she'd hastily twisted her brittle hair into earlier that morning. When was the last time she'd showered? She couldn't recall, not that it mattered. There were more important matters at hand.

She got up from the hard wooden chair. She'd only ever had the two, not that she'd ever needed the second one, except for that one time. Better not think about that.

The faded yellow curtains were still open, the sunlight struggling to get through. She pulled them closed without bothering to look outside.

She went back to the chair but didn't sit down. She stared at the table; a hand-me-down from a great grand-whatever that she'd never even met. Two glasses set before her. Two potions; one choice.

One cup to remember who she was, the other to forget what she'd become. She couldn't have both. Time to choose.

I love the combination of mysterious and mundane here. The undefined notion of who she is, and the tactile details. Some contrast in the setting: the brightness of the curtains, too, not only in the sun, although the furniture is ascetic. The reference to something having happened in her life – someone on that chair. I wonder if it’s intentional that “who she was” and “who she’d become” would mean the same thing, wouldn’t they? But it’s what she’d become… A wonderful drabble to reread and try to interpret!
