Title: Winter Dress-Up
Fandom: None
Rating: G.
Summary: Definitely not a Christmas tree…
Content Notes: I have an “indoor pet” Japanese maple named Akimitsu, meaning “Autumn Light”. Just in time for my birthday last month, he lived up to his name, with more than half of his leaves turning bright red… but then, of course, within a few days they withered and fell. I felt bad for his being half-denuded, so I decided to dress him up a bit until his spring growth comes in.

It was an amazing stroke of luck that among all the Christmas lights on the store shelf, I found one last string of Thanksgiving-themed lights—shaped like maple leaves. *g*

I was expecting Akimitsu to be a bonsai but I see that's not quite the case. How is he adapting to indoor living? (It's a microclimate crapshoot here with Japanese maples, especially with climate change.)

Akimitsu is of the Fireglow variety, and around two and a half feet in height. As far as I can tell, he's doing just fine indoors, with two or three waterings a week and sunshine in a multi-windowed sunroom. (I've only had him since April, so this is my first experience with his seasonal changes.)

In the region where I live, Japanese maples are quite common as outdoor ornamental trees. Seeing their gorgeous foliage in my first couple of autumns here was part of what made me want one.

Here they are occasional punctuation, because we can have pretty harsh winters and our snow cover is variable. I suppose their abilities as indoor plants depends on your heating and light situations. That he was able to color change suggests good things.
