Summary: Ray will never forget the smile on Ben’s face when he saw the beauty of the waves and the fresh air just outside Chicago.
Ray stood in line at the pharmacy waiting to pick up the photos of the mini break away he had taken with Ben.
Ray smiled, thinking back over it. They had been working very hard, pulling double shifts as flu and chicken pox epidemics had hit the station. When things got back to normal they were given a few days off, so Ray had taken Ben to show him that there is beauty to Chicago.
Flashback….
It was just after lunch time and Ray was waiting in the park for Ben to arrive. He sat overlooking the duck pond. Swans and Canada geese wobbled around making happy sounds as the kids fed them.
Ray saw a little girl run towards him holding a flower in her hand. She stopped right in front of him and held it out, saying, “This is for you, you’re cute.” Then she handed it to him before running off again.
Ray took the flower, blushing and just about managed to say ‘thank you’ as she ran back to her mother giggling nervously.
Shaking his head, Ray laughed and smelled the flower. He didn’t see Ben sit down beside him.
“Should I be jealous, Ray?” Ben teased,
Smiling a glorious smile, Ray shook his head in amusement, “Never Ben, never.”
Later that evening they set off for their mini break away by the lake they call Michigan. Ray wanted Ben to see that there was beauty just a stones throw from the tall buildings, smog and dirt that sometimes surrounded them in their job.
Standing on the sand with the grains between their toes, Ray would never forget the look in Ben’s eyes; it was brighter than the stars.
Ben’s voice was full of awe, “Ray, this is beautiful, I didn’t know this was here.
Setting up the blanket they sat leaning into each other, “Ya, it’s a little bit of heaven right on our door step and I wanted to share it with you Ben,” replied Ray.
Turning his head to look into Ray’s beautiful blue eyes, Ben’s voice was thick with emotion and love, “Thank you Ray, this means the world to me, I love you so much.”
Leaning in to place a kiss on Ben’s lips, Ray replied, “I love you too Ben, this can be our bit of heaven in Chicago, can’t it?”
Giving Ray another loving kiss before leaning his forehead against Ray’s, “Yes Ray, it can, our little bit of heaven just for you and me and Dief of course.”
They laughed as they watched Dief jump in the waves happily, before Ray replied chuckling, “Ya and Dief too.”
Present…
It was Ray’s turn inline and Jim, who he knew, pulled him aside, “Ray, I personally did your photos and I found the one you told me about, the waves one. Well I hope you don’t mind, but I framed it for you to give to Ben.”
Handing Ray the picture Jim saw that Ray was very touched as his face lit up and tears sprung to his eyes as he spoke, “Jim, this is beautiful, I…I don’t know what to say?”
Putting a hand on Ray’s shoulder Jim replied, “Just enjoy your little bit of heaven Ray, OK.”
Ray tried to pay, but Jim wouldn’t take the money he just wanted them to enjoy the memories of their trip that came from the photos.
They lay in bed that night looking at the photos. “Someday Ben I am going to marry you standing right there,” Ray’s said, pointing to the picture of the beach with the waves looking so beautiful, “With our friends and family sharing it, what do you think?”
Gazing at Ray, Ben took his hand in his before leaning in for a passionate kiss, “I didn’t think it was possible to love you more than I do, but I do. I love you more and more every day,” he said. “Yes Ray, someday we will marry in our little bit of heaven.”
Snuggling into Ben’s embrace Ray closed his eyes and smiled. “Greatness,” he replied, before drifting off to sleep with sweet dreams of his Ben and their future together.
