Ray woke up and groaned, holding his eyes. They were blurry and he tried to get the room into focus. Shifting in the bed he felt a warm body behind him. Startled, he reached back and felt a solid body rather than a soft one, or an empty space. He was in bed with a man for sure, not since college has this happened. Turning over he got his eyes focused in time to see who it was. It was his partner and friend, Benton Fraser. Gasping to himself, he exclaimed, “Holy shit, how did this happen?”

Rolling on his back, Ray rubbed his face with his left hand. That was when he noticed the ring that was now on his ring finger. Staring at it, Ray wondered what the heck had happened. Glancing over at Fraser who lay beside him, he saw a matching one on his finger. Ray tried to convince himself that he was still dreaming, yup, it was the only way he would have the man of his dreams in bed with him wearing what looked like a matching wedding ring. The last thing Ray remembered was toasting Dewey at his bachelor party.

Playing the night’s events back over in his mind, bit by bit is came back to him. They were in Niagara Falls, the Canadian side of it and he remembered a number of bars and games they had Dewey play, but then it was a blank. Maybe Fraser would know. Ray knew he had to wake the man lying next to him, although he didn’t want to.

Reaching over, Ray gently shook him, calling his name. “Fraser, Frase, wake up.”

Fraser’s blue eyes eyes opened slowly and Ray was met with a confused look. Fraser sat up fast and looked around him. “Ray, what happened?” he asked.

Sitting up next to him, Ray scratched his jaw as he answered, “I think we got married, Frase.”

Fraser’s eyes went wide with shock and he looked at Ray, “What! How?”

Shrugging his shoulders, Ray glanced at Fraser, “I don’t know, I can’t remember, do you?”

Rubbing his forehead, Fraser closed his eyes doing his best to remember. It took only a few seconds and Fraser began to nod, “I remember Ray, we were passing a chapel after the fifth, no sixth bar and we joked saying we acted like a married couple so why not make it legal and the others cheered and we went in. I remember photos and saying yes, and I remember…our first kiss.”

Ray’s mouth hung open after hearing all of this. Getting his voice to work he said, “So we really are married in the legal way and we kissed. What else did we do?” Looking under the covers he saw that they were both naked, “Did we um, you know…?”

Shaking his head Fraser answered, “No Ray, we didn’t have sex. After you carried me over the threshold we just got undressed and fell asleep.”

Nodding and with a smile curving at his the edges of his lips, Ray started laughing, “No sex on our wedding night, that sucks, huh?”

Fraser joined in with the laughing, “Yes Ray. You know I must confess that I have always loved you and I feared telling you in case you rejected me and then our friendship would have been over.”

Reaching over, Ray took Fraser’s left hand in his left hand saying, “We are silly, I felt the same, I do feel the same, and I do love you, Ben.”

Looking deep into Ray’s eyes, Ben replied with such emotion in his voice, “I love you too Ray, so much.”

Leaning against Ben’s chest, Ray giggled, “We don’t do things by half do we! Talk about backward, we got married before we started dating, but we were never normal so that’s OK, right?”

Kissing the top of Ray’s head, Ben smiled with laughter in voice, “What’s normal? We are who we are, backward or not and we love each other, this will last for an eternity.”

Snuggling deeper into his now-husband’s arms, Ray sighed with contentment. “For eternity, Ben.”
