It took a whole five years before Umi sat down, looked at Clef, and frowned. "Wait. What did you even do for Emeraude?"

Clef blinked at her across the room. "What do you mean?"

"As Guru. I mean, the Pillar was stronger than everyone else, right? Why did she need the most powerful mage or whatever you want to call yourself to hang out at court?"

"I could give her advice on, things?"

Umi blinked at him. Clef shrugged back at her.

"Mostly I looked after the Guild, but advising the Pillar on things that related to magic was one of the jobs... and mostly, I think, the Guru was one of the people who was unlikely to be frightened by someone so powerful. So... I guess you could say officially, I was an advisor. Unofficially, I was a friend."

"Hmpf." Umi settled back in her chair. "Well, at least someone thought about her being lonely, I guess."
