Summary: When Ray is injured he needs Comfort and finds it in Ben.

Ray had been feeling sore ever since he’d gotten run over by a bike messenger earlier that day. Sitting on the couch leaning against Ben he didn’t feel any better, even though hours had passed and he’d tried a soak in the tub, with Ben of course.

Having fallen asleep against Ben, he managed to get Ray to lie down on his lap propped up on pillows without waking him. Ben worried that Ray may have damaged his ribs very badly, but Ray being Ray wouldn’t go to the hospital.

Sometime later Ray moved in his sleep causing him to wake with a gasp of pain, “Jesus that hurts!” Ray said as he sat up slowly.

Worried, Ben rubbed Ray’s back as he spoke, “Ray, please let me help you, let me take you to the hospital, this could be more serious than we think.”

Ray was sweating now with the pain getting more intense, but he still wanted to refuse until he saw the terrified look in Ben’s eyes. Not wanting to upset his lover any more than necessary, he gave in, “OK, OK Ben, I do think maybe I need the hospital after all.”

Rubbing circles on his lover’s back Ben’s voice was gentle as he replied, “Thank you Ray, I know that you hate hospitals, but we can’t take a risk if this is serious. Please wait here and I will go fix an overnight bag, just in case they need to keep you in.” Getting up, Ben placed a kiss on top of Ray’s head.

Ray watched as Ben made his way to their bedroom, the love he felt for that man made him want to get better. The pain was getting worse as the minutes passed, the dull then sharp pains were too much to bear.

It didn’t take long for Ben to get the bag ready with everything Ray needed and soon he was back by Ray’s side. “Come on Ray let me help you,” Ben said to the slender blond as he helped him to his feet and he supported him all the way to the car. Sweat poured off Ray like he had just run a marathon.

As Ben drove them to the hospital he noticed that Ray was breathing deeply and panting at times to help ease the pain he was in.

Ben frowned, he was worried out of his mind. “Ray’s it’s going to be OK, we are nearly there,” he said, reaching over and giving his partner’s hand a reassuring squeeze.

They were lucky to find a parking space close to the door and were soon making their way into the ER.

A nurse who had been on shift more than once when the two of them had come in before spotted them and came running over. “Ray, Ben, what happened?” she asked, worriedly.

Ray was in too much pain to answer the kind nurse, so Ben did on his behalf. “Ray had a run in with a bike messenger today and has been in pain ever since, it has got significantly worse, so we had to come in.”

The nurse knew that it had to be very bad in order for one Ray Kowalski to come into a hospital. Grabbing a wheelchair and sitting Ray into it she took them straight into a cubicle to be seen, which Ben was very thankful for.

Once there and with Ben’s help she got Ray onto a bed. Tucking him in her soft, motherly voice filled the air. “Now Ray, I am going to get the doctor to come see you as fast as I can, they may run a number of tests to see what is wrong. Until then I’m afraid I can only give you gas and air to help with the pain, OK.”

Nodding, Ray spoke through gritted teeth, “OK, thanks Annie.”

Smiling she made her way to get a doctor as fast as she could. She liked those two, they always treated her with respect.

Ben was worried sick watching Ray in such pain and knowing he couldn’t take it away from him.

Holding Ray’s slender hand in his and rubbing the back with his thumb Ben knew he didn’t need to say out loud how he felt about the man in the bed, it was all said through the simple touch and smile.

Holding the hand in his a little tighter Ray managed to speak, “Ben, I’m going to be fine, I love you, you know. You are not going to get rid of me that easily.”

Kissing the back of Ray’s hand Ben whispered, “I love you more than words can say Ray, I wish that I could take your pain away. If you tried leaving I would follow you to the ends of the earth and beyond.” That was said with a glint in his eye.

Before Ray could reply, the doctor came in introducing herself, “Hello, I’m Dr Bunch, how can I help you? I hear we are in a lot of pain.”

Since Ray was using the gas and air Ben once again answered on his behalf, “Dr Bunch, earlier today Ray was struck by a bike messenger and I fear he may have damaged his ribs.”

Dr Bunch took notes as she listened and came over to Ray, “Ray, I am just going to take a look at you, tell me if it becomes too much for you, alright.”

Ray nodded and managed to say, “Alright Doc.”

The doctor felt around and got no reaction to the ribs. Frowning, she decided to get x-rays to make sure. They came back clear.

Ben was even more worried now as he had thought it was a broken or cracked rib causing all that pain.

More tests were ordered and done and Dr Bunch came back with the results. “Ray, we have discovered what is wrong, you have kidney stones. Now my college Dr Burton will be looking after you, as this is her field. We will make you as comfortable as possible up in a hospital room. Sorry that we couldn’t help you more down here, but you will be in excellent hands.”

Ray’s eyes widened. Kidney stones! He had heard that passing them was the same pain as a woman felt while giving birth. It was extremely painful already. If men had to have the children the world would end, thought Ray, as no man would go through this willingly.

Ben sat down in the chair waiting for the doctor to come; he hated to see Ray his beautiful Ray lying there helpless in a hospital bed. Feeling jittery Ben stood back up and began stroking his lover’s blond hair; it always relaxed him when he did.

Even though Ray’s eyes were closed he could see the worried look on Ben’s face and he did not like the fact that he was the cause of it. Ray took another gulp of the gas and air and they both heard the doctor come in.

Looking up but not letting go of Ray’s hand, or stopping petting his hair, Ben still managed to greet the doctor politely, “Hello Doctor.”

Smiling her breath taken by his beauty she composed herself before speaking, “Hi, I’m Dr Burton, I have looked over all of the test results, Mr Kowalski, and by the looks of the size of the stones we have two options in order get rid of them. One is non-invasive, we use shockwaves emitted from an electrode to break down the stones, but it can be painful and doesn't always make them small enough to pass easily. Option two is we put you under general anaesthetic, perform an ureterorenoscopy and break up the stones using a laser. It is really up to you, Mr Kowalski.”

“A ure-what?” asked Ray, looking to Fraser for an explanation.

“A small tube is inserted into your penis,” replied Fraser as the doctor nodded.

Ray’s eye shot wider as the words hit him and his voice trembled, “Insert what, where and how?”

“Well, we use a very tiny tube and it’s passed through your penis and up...” began Dr Burton, but Ray stopped her before she could say any more.

“No way doc,” he said, shaking his head as he got the words out. “The only hand on my penis other than mine is Ben’s.”
This made Ben blush ten times the shade of red anyone should turn. “Ray!”

Ray continued, “Doc is there any other way you can do this? Apart from the shock waves and stuff, I mean.”

Shaking her head she sat on the edge of the bed. Dr Burton spoke as gently as she could. “Ray, this will be the least painful way. If we let you attempt to pass them naturally as they are the pain may become too much too bear as they are rather large and may cause you serious damage. You will be anaesthetised and won’t remember any of it, I promise.”

Ray felt he was on the verge of tears, the thought of having to do this was terrifying, but the thought of the pain was far worse. Looking to Ben then back at the doctor, he nodded. “OK Doc, you can go for it, you can, am, do the thing with the penis if it means less pain, I don't do pain, Doc.”

Patting his leg, she smiled as she stood up, “I’ll send the nurse in with the medication to make you sleepy, it won’t take long.” The doctor left the room.

As soon as the doctor left, Ben kissed Ray and said, “I am very proud of you Ray, you will be fine and I won't leave your side.”

Holding Ben's hand Ray's voice shook as he spoke, “Please don't Ben, use my handcuffs if you need to so they can't move you away from me.”

Laughing lightly Ben once again Ben kissed Ray, “Anything you want Ray, anything you want.”

The nurse gave Ray his medication and when it started to take effect Ray began to ramble, “Ben, Ben, my Benny bear, I wowve you, you know. I do, yup I do and I want to have your babies, lots of baby Bens, girls and boys. We need a garden with swings and slides…oh and a sandpit with a cover.” Pulling Ben closer he whispered, “Did you know, Ben, that if kids get cat poop in their eyes they can go blind, so we need a cover for the sandpit, so no cat can poop gets in, so don’t forget, OK.”

Ben smiled and laughed at Ray’s babbling as he ran his fingers through Ray hair, giving him comfort, “I will Ray and I won’t forget the cover I promise. Why don’t you rest, I’ll be right here, I’m not going anywhere.”

Making a kissy face Ray gave a goofy smile as he replied, “Hmm, ’kay, Ben bear, my cute cuddly Ben bear, wowve you…” as he drifted off to slumber land.

Ben was thankful that he was allowed to stay with Ray as long as he stayed by his head. He had to be dressed in scrubs and scrubbed up with antiseptic soap of course, but it was worth it to be allowed to stay by his partner’s side, running his fingers through the soft blond spikes.

It was a few hours later when Ray finally woke up. His mouth felt like cotton and he needed water and as always Ben was right there by his side with what he needed. It had been a hard day and he could not have gotten through it without the love of his life. Taking Ben’s hand in his he uttered the words, “Love you Ben bear. I know that I was high when I said it, but I do, I really do wanna have your babies, lots of them.”

Kissing Ray forehead, Ben’s eyes shone with love. “I Love you too, Ray, my beautiful Ray and I want to have your babies as well, lots of them.”

Grinning Ray joked, “Sounds like we will need that big house then.”

Kissing Ray once more, Ben replied, “I’ll buy you any size house you want Ray, any size.”

Gazing up at the wonderful man, Ray answered before falling back to sleep, “Must be true love then, soul-mates.”

Ben nodded his voice full of emotion, “Yes Ray, soul-mates.”
