"Are you sure you want me to do this?" The old Yashou grips Yunlan's currently unmarked shoulder. "Not everyone gets one of these."

"I'm sure."

Yunlan knows what his father will say if he finds his son with a soulmark. Dixingren have splintered souls and the daemons to prove it. Haixingren don't; their souls don't travel in and out of their skin.

So the single golden pinion on his back becomes a set of flaming phoenix wings.

Only later, long after the Envoy freezes the shadow-man and his eagle daemon alights with magical fire, will Yunlan understand what he's done.
