It was customary for Dwarves bearing or nursing to stay within the halls. Safe, surrounded by good rock and sturdy stone, untroubled by the idiocies and assumptions of the other speaking Peoples. Customary for them to dress in garments that some might consider feminine, and refrain from the truly hazardous Work — deep-shaft mining, tending to the upper reaches of the air-shafts, mucking out the plumbing, working with the more volatile and poisonous of metals and chemicals. Customary, but not required. Not law. Circumstance did not always allow for seclusion, nor temperament. Certainly as exiles they had very little choice in the matter. Thorin was inclined to make new customs.
