In the Third Valley ritual was a moment that Crane could only name resurrection.

Never mighty, and without the dread of his name that others might carry, still Crane had always before made care and caution sufficient to success. In the midst of ritual, his belief in the outcome had never before wavered.

Yet when the malice attacked with the weight of ten thousand hungry years, Crane felt the ritual torn from his hands, crushed by a mountain of despair.
