Summary: A night-time interlude.


“There were times over the years when I thought I’d never see you again.” Shen Wei’s tone was matter-of-fact, but Yunlan could feel the tension running through him even now they were here, lying together and at least temporarily safe on a thin mattress in the corner of Cong Bo’s living-room.

Outside the world was in chaos and upheaval. The Haixing Department of Supervision was searching for them, and Ye Zun was no doubt marshalling his forces. But there was no use worrying about that tonight. Yunlan had more pressing matters to deal with. He rubbed Shen Wei’s shoulder, thinking of the bright-eyed youth he’d been all those years ago. “And now you’re never going to stop seeing me. Who knows – you might grow to miss those days.”

Yunlan couldn’t dwell on it, on the thought of Shen Wei alone for so long. Lonely for so long. If he let the truth of it take shape it would break his heart, and that would be a damned waste given what the present had to offer. He focused instead on their reunion. “You could have given me a hint, you know, when we met, instead of being so remote and mysterious.”

“I gave you several hints. You kept suspecting me of crimes.” There was a smile in Shen Wei’s voice now. He breathed out, and his body softened against Yunlan’s.

“Well, you kept acting suspicious.” He found Shen Wei’s hand in the dark and brought it to his lips. “I’m sure that’s the only reason I couldn’t stay away.”

“You were persistent,” Shen Wei agreed.

Yunlan shoved him gently, teasing. “You moved into my building!”

“I couldn’t stay away either.” Shen Wei shifted, raising up, and then his fingertips were on Yunlan’s jaw, his mouth on Yunlan’s mouth.

Yunlan welcomed his kiss, returned it tenfold, warmth and happiness filling him despite everything beyond these four walls. They had found each other again, drawn together like two parts of a whole – that was all that mattered. “Keep it that way,” he said, when they finally lay back down. “Always.”
