Kate doesn't want to watch. She doesn't need to see this. She can't look away. She has to know. She has to bear witness. There's a strange sense of longing tugging at her. She's not oblivious, she knows she's fallen stupidly in love with Clint. And it is stupid. They're partners. They work together and for the past two months, they've even been living together. Of course so was Jessica Drew. They were all living and working together under the same roof. Roger and Jess had the second floor with little Gerry. Kate and Clint had the third floor. Same apartment, different bedrooms. It was all a little too close for comfort sometimes. Or maybe it just seemed that way was just at moments like this with Jess and Clint in deep conversation and standing so close.

Sure Jess was with Roger and they seemed happy and everything, but she and Clint had a history. Messy sexy history. Kate wasn't really in the mood to witness history repeating itself. Especially not right in front of her eyes.

She watched Clint as he leaned against the wall. He looked relaxed, comfortable even. Dressed in dark jeans and a t-shirt so faded she couldn't make out the logo. His hair was freshly washed and still damp from the shower. He looked good.

Kate told herself she wasn't spying. She was a detective and she was simply detecting. Her chest tightened as she watched him lean in. He was going to kiss her, she was sure of it. Then Kate sees Gerry just as Clint places a kiss on the giggling toddler's little blond head.

Instantly the tension balled up in Kate's gut turns to something else. Something softer. Something sweet. She smiles and moves out of the doorway. The last thing she needs is Clint witnessing her jealous lurking. One of these days she was going to tell Clint how she felt, it just wasn't going to be today.
