During the war, Ratchet the Goblin Inventor had been known for building an improved steam tank. The first personal steam-powered battle walker had been invented by a goblin called Guntz. Ratchet's had improved the design by making it more mobile, comfortable and having a built-in heavy crossbow.

The war had been brought to an end by Bulzome's defeat, and now he was finally free to make engines of progress, prove that Goblins could be civilised too. Always on the lookout for an opportunity for profit, Ratchet noted that record-keeping in the camp was difficult and their force had been heavily reliant on the Church as the only institution with that many books. As detailed personal records were necessary for resurrection ceremonies, this also reinforced the monopoly of the Church on resurrection, even though an elite battle priest or shaman could manage the ritual.

Aspia's first automated printing press was popular with tacticians, then hotel chains and train stations, finally going into wide enough use for sale to indivuals be practical. Soon, a Ratchet (tm) record book was a common sight in any local store.

The forest goblins hated him for encouraging the humans to chop down trees and it almost started a second war but then the new wave of resurrectioners invented a spell to bring trees back to life and everyone was content with the new age of progress, at least until the unfortunate accident with the steam automata.
