Summary: Alexander wakes up in the afterlife.

Am I dead?

Alexander blinks and finds himself in a valley. Grassy hills, a river a mile away from him. He's on his back in the grass, and it's so very comfortable. He puts his hand on his ribs and finds a hole, but there's no blood. Burr's "WAIT!" resonates in his mind. He doesn't know what to do.

Now that he finally was caught by Death, what was he supposed to do? Look for his lover, he supposes. He gets up and cleans himself from the grass. He's moving around, unsure where to go. There's so much to take in — he can see buildings in the distance. They're of multiple stories and have a touch that doesn't seem much like the one of his time.

"Alexander!"

He stops dead in his tracks. "Laurens?"

They hug tightly. Alexander can still smell the battlefield and the blood on him. "Shouldn't we be in Hell? I mean, we did..." he lets the sentence hang loose. He isn't sure how to finish it. We did have sex? It sounds wrong, somehow.

"Gay, they call it in the future. Or homosexual."

Alexander blinks. A term other than sodomite, than sinner. "How do you know of the future?"

"There's... a thing. It's hard to explain. It lets you know everything that's going to happen. Jefferson is going to have a trip when he finds out slavery is going to be abolished."

"It is?" John nods. "What else?"

"Uh, we have fifty states in the future. And in 2015... same-gender marriage is legalized across all of them."

"So we could get married?" Alexander exclaims, holding John by his arms.

John laughs. "You should talk about that to your wife first, when she dies." Alexander nods. "Talking about Ms. Schuyler..." his demeanor goes colder. "What in the hell was that, Alexander?"

"What?"

"You cheated on her!"

"I know!"

John hisses and holds him by his cravat, pushing him closer. "You made her miserable! And now you've left her with all your debts." He brings a palm near his face, but he pulls away when he flinches. "Aren't you guilty? Goddamn it, Alexander!"

"She forgave me after my son died!"

"You still — you still did that! You're a despicable man, Alexander."

He goes quiet. "I know."

"I mean, I still want to be with you," he tries, "but you need to learn that what you did was messed up. You broke her heart into tiny pieces! Just so you could sleep with some — with some whore!"

"I know!" he yells, and he does all he knows how to do with John. He slams his mouth against his crudely, kissing and moving and touching. John groans against his mouth and bites at his lip. "I did many things wrong. I killed my son. God, I killed my son. But — but I'm sorry. I'm really fucking sorry."

"I know. I'm sorry for blowing up on you like that."

Their lips meet again, this time softly, calmly. "I deserved it."

Then, they hear a faint, "Pops!"

Alexander turns around to see his son. His hair short and curly, brown eyes and a bloodless gunshot wound above his hip. "Philip!" he cries, and they hug with all the love in the world. "Oh my God, Philip, I am so sorry."

"It's alright, pops," he says, "I got myself into it, anyway."

"You didn't! You were barely an adult, and I didn't think that man would shoot you." He had been a fool, thinking Eacker was in any way a man of honor. "God, I am so sorry."

His son is alive — not really — right in front of him, and God, he'd give him the world. Everything feels so new, like a fresh start, and he's going to make sure he can do the best he can now.

"A month down there is a day here," Philip tells him.

Alexander says, "Alright, kid. Alright."

"I've been calling Mr. Laurens dad ever since I got here. He kind of told me about you two, pops." Alexander goes pink, and John seems apologetic.

"I think you have two dads now, then," he tells him. Philip laughs and hugs John and then Alexander. He loves his kid so much.

This doesn't feel wrong — somehow it doesn't.

It takes six hundred days, but Eliza dies. She's back to her youthful self when they see her in the afterlife, and she cries hard when she sees Philip, Alexander and John.

"Alexander!"

"Betsey," he whispers in response. They kiss in between tears, holding each other close together and muttering about the years and everything that happened.

"I'm sorry —"

"I forgave you long ago —"

"You did an amazing job with the orphanage —"

"I didn't want kids to experience what you did," she says.

"I had a thing with John," he mumbles.

"I know."

He blinks a few times. "You don't mind?"

"I don't mind at all."

Philip hugs her. "I missed you, mom!" he exclaims, and she holds him tight. Because oh God, all three of them are there, together. "Mr. Laurens... I kind of called him dad before pops died. Is that alright?"

"Yeah." Eliza smiles, those wide and toothy smiles Alexander loves. "We're a family now."

And they're a family now, and Alexander kisses John on the lips. Everything is alright, and they'll take things one at a time.
