Carl's shoes are scuffed and worn; that's a badge of honor in this business. You don't last long without a few scratches, wedging a foot in a door sometimes just to get it slammed in your face anyway.

Tonight, he tries another trick-- says yes to the offer of coffee, and yes again to milk and a refill and anything else that'll keep him sitting here with this nervous young woman who knows so much more than she's telling. It's rude to keep asking, but he can't stop now, not when the answers are so close.
