Kate knew how this ended. She had known since the night she took someone’s life. She wasn’t making it back to Prosperity. She would never see her friends there again. They’d never know what happened to her. They would never know who she really was or what she’d done either. Maybe that was a silver lining.

She felt weak, yet her mind was clear. The Chaos Eater was gone. She hoped that meant that it was dead and that they’d won.

When Kate saw August, she was close to losing consciousness. The sight of him was like a light in the darkness. She tried to cross the room to him but didn’t make it. The pain was too much and she had lost a lot of blood. August caught her.

Wait. This is how it ended. Here in August’s arms. She knew as soon as he said the words. When he asked her to stay. That was exactly what she was going to do. She was going to stay with August. Forever, or however long this sort of thing worked. That was okay. At least she knew her soul would be someplace good. It was more than she had hoped for, much more than she deserved. Another silver lining. She laughed quietly. There were worse ways to go.
