Peeta was the first to attempt a fire in the fireplace. It was not something that I ever cared for, but I let him poke and prod at it whenever he visited.

The day he did get it to work was the day I snapped at him. It was Prim’s birthday, and I never wanted the cake he baked in memory of her. It had small primroses on the sides, and the sight made me cry.

I never thought about what it would feel like for him to see me throw the cake out, but I walked past him, up the stairs and into my bedroom only to fall into bed and cry myself to sleep. I thought he would show himself out.

But later, when I woke up and the house was shrouded in darkness, I found him seated on the floor in front of a roaring fire with his back propped up against the couch.

I made my way over to him slowly, my bare feet soft against the wooden floors and my nervousness showing clearly on my face.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

His throat convulsed as he swallowed. “It’s okay,” he said softly. He shifted slightly to give me room and I gladly took the seat he offered.

Cautiously, I circled an arm around his waist and leaned against him. When he didn’t push me away, I let out a relieved breath. I had hoped that he would accept my apology.

I snuggled closer, burrowing my head against his chest as his arm surrounded me. I heard the small sigh that escaped him before he placed a light kiss on my forehead.

I tightened my grip on him and closed my eyes. I had missed him. It was the first time in a long time that I slept soundly.
