Once, a long time ago, when he was a child, his gran-gran told him the stories of a great monster in the depths of the water. Unlike many in his tribe, Sokka doubted the existence of such a creature because logically, he knew that if it really existed someone should have seen it within the past generations of his family.

It was always the same thing with the tribe.

Don’t go to the hot pools, Sokka, the Reichii will see your presence as a threat in his home.

Don’t go to the edge of the village, Sokka, the Reichii will think you’re food and attack.

Don’t even think about going to the super awesome snow mountain that would allow you penguin sled, because the Reichii eats the penguins and he might think you’re stealing his food and get angry.

Psh. Sokka knew what it was. It was simply the village elders’ way to make sure that he didn’t go anywhere he was supposed to go.

After all, there was no such thing as a Reichii and he was the oldest male in the village now. It was his duty to protect the boundary against the Fire Nation.

Even though he didn’t believe in the myth, the day he did go to the edge of the village was an accident, though. He nearly lost his boomerang and after a few extreme moves, he finally did lose it.

“Oh no!” he thought, as he fell flat on his face and watched it bob away. He reached and reached, but couldn’t touch his mittens to it.

Then a surprise wave came up from nowhere and the boomerang bobbed back to him. Laughing, he picked it up and stuck his tongue out into the water.

“I knew you weren’t real!” he laughed.

Just then, a monster broke through the surface, so big, so long, so scaly, that it caused him to scream and move back. He even dropped his boomerang in surprise. But then the monster touched the tip of its nose to the boomerang out of curiosity before leaning back. Sokka took it slowly, shaking horribly with fear, then watched as the monster dived back under and disappeared from sight.

“Okay then,” he muttered to himself, completely flabbergasted. “I definitely didn’t expect that.”
