Title: The Wee Folk of Merlin Crag
Fandom: Original Work
Rating: Gen
Length: 132
Content Notes: Burns stanza (x 4); fairies
Summary: The Wee Folk of Merlin Crag capture a lord who dares to cut peat from their bog. They release him and he discovers that 20 years have passed and the poor cutter (who refused to cut the peat from the Wee Folks' home) has become lord in his place.
Author's Note: for my [livejournal.com profile] 1_million_words Bingo square: the fairy; story from An Illustrated Treasury of Scottish Mythical Creatures.

The fierce wee folk of Merlin Crag

Beneath the boggy earth did drag

And humble him who dared to brag

That twas his right

To cut the roof, the peaty slag,

Of fearsome sprite.

Poor cutter heeded well the plea

But master would not let them be

And so became their enemy

And captive too

A jester bound unhappily

To heather brew.

The wee folk’s turf grew back again

And thus twas time for them to send

Their prisoner up to meet his end

Alone, displaced

As lord, fate-snatched and made to spend

His days disgraced

Upon the bog, a poor peat-cutter

And eke his meager bread and butter

From moor’s edge. Hark and hear him mutter

“Tis years not days

That passed. Cursed am I to suffer

The wee folks’ ways.”

Is there nothing you can't turn your pen to? This is brilliant!

Aw. You flatter me. Thank you. I'm glad you liked it.

There's not much I can't turn my pen to, of course, should is another conversation...

The fairy was a tough one. This Scottish book (for children) was the only thing that showed up on the shelf about fairies at my local library. So I thought I'd give Uncle Bobby a go. I only know what a Burns stanza is because of the 60.

I thought about downloading Sir Arthur's fairy book, but I'm already indulging the ol' coot enough with The Valley of Fear.

Just wanted to say how much your comment made me laugh ^_^ (Another week and we'll be through it!)

What an interesting direction to go in for the fairy prompt. And using the Burns stanza was the perfect choice. I liked A jester bound unhappily/ To heather brew.

Thank you! I didn't know the story before reading the book, but there's a poor peat cutter and nobody cuts Merlin Crag for fear of disturbing the wee folk that live there and the cutter won't do it, so the greedy lord goes and cuts it and the wee folk kidnap him and keep him until the turf grows back. He thinks it's 20 days but it's 20 years and the poor peat cutter has taken his place in the big house and the lord has to take the poor peat cutter's shack in the end.
