Sherlock Holmes (ACD): Poetry: Surfacing

  • Mar. 6th, 2016 at 9:11 PM
Title: Surfacing
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (ACD)
Rating: Gen
Words: 110
Content Notes: English sonnet; from “The Lion’s Mane”; POV animal (Lion’s mane jellyfish)

Adrift in currents strong, I wander wide
And far in search of waters warm and still.
A briny jungle beast without a pride.
I rise, and into shallow pools, I spill.

Afloat on waves serene, I drift again.
Exploring cranny after nook, I comb
The rocky shores. At length, I choose my den.
I pause, sheath claws, down sails, and settle home.

My golden mane extends as I retire
In tidal quay, at rest at journey’s end.
Until a clumsy fiend ignites my ire.
I surface. Lashing up and out, I fend.

“Disturb my peace and face my wrath!“ I roar.
A trembling heart beats once and beats no more.

A fine poem. Thank you very much for taking the trouble to give us such a good one.

I hope somehow ACD gets to enjoy it. I bet he'd love it, too.

Thank you! I am learning that some of these challenges are like fountains (with many ideas gushing forth) and some are like trickles (with very few). This one is the latter. My original idea didn't work out, but I didn't want to miss a challenge so I thought I'd take advantage of yesterday's haiku and try a sonnet.

I think the great thing about the challenges in this comm is the chance to try out different things.

What a brilliant reworking of the story. I love the description: A briny jungle beast without a pride and the imagery in into shallow pools, I spill. And you've made such good use of the form - it seems to fit your poem perfectly. It gives the jellyfish a sense of nobility.

Thank you! I was worried that I wouldn't have anything for this flash challenge so I wanted to build on the haiku from the 60 poem page. Some challenges drag but this one seems to get going by very quickly. And I should have labeled this properly because it is my GAMOTW (gardnerhill appreciation moment of the week) because she was so [quarter word] enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the jellyfish on Sunday.

Oh this is lovely! And I'm honored that I inspired this. We totally need more fanworks in the POV Jellyfish tag.

Thank you! I agree. And I learn something every Sunday. Thanks for the education.

Thank you! It's amazing what you learn from unlikely venues - I've got a small list of historical stuff and scientific terms I picked up from watching Saturday morning cartoons!
