“It’s not safe,” Zoe said with a smile.

Inara trailed a slow finger along the outside of Zoe’s thigh. “It should be fine.”

Zoe raised an eyebrow. “No point in doing something halfway.”

“Just because it’s fast doesn’t mean it’ll be ‘halfway,’” Inara said, feigning offense. “I mean, just think -- if you weren’t so keen on conversation, we could already be--”

“Kaylee?” River yelled as she burst into Inara’s shuttle. “Is Kaylee here?”

“No, she’s not,” Inara said kindly.

“We’re playing hide and conquer. I’m winning. I mean I will be winning when I find her.”

“We wish you luck,” Zoe said.

“Okay, see you!” River said, running out.

Zoe gave Inara a pointed look. “I told you – there is no privacy on this ship.”

“That was an isolated--”

Kaylee poked her head in. “Can I hide in your bedroom, Inara? River and I are playing--”

“Yes, we know,” Zoe said. “You’re welcome to hide here. I have work to do anyway.”

Inara sighed softly but smiled at Kaylee. “Sure, go ahead. I’ll see you later, Zoe,” she added, touch of tease in her voice.

“Yes, you will.”
