TITLE: Half Birthday
FANDOM: Supernatural
WORD COUNT: 302
RATING: PG
CHARACTER: Sam (age 5), OFC teacher, Dean (9), John
SUMMARY: Sam is introduced to the idea of half birthdays. Unfortunately, he is too young to realise the significance of his.

When Sam Winchester was five years old, he landed in a class where the teacher was reading "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland". She showed the class a bit of the animated movie, where the characters were singing about "A Very Merry Un-Birthday".

After that, the teacher asked a few kids when their birthdays were, and wrote them on the board. Then she told the class about a tradition in her house.

"We celebrate our half birthdays. Exactly six months from our birthday, we have a cake and a special trip out. For me, my birthday is January 29, so my half birthday is July 29."

Sam looked at the year's calendar the teacher had handed out. He put his finger on May 2, and counted six months forward.

November 2.

He looked up at the board, where the day's date was displayed, and broke into a grin. His half birthday was the very next day!

After school, Sam couldn't wait to tell Dean about this tradition. But he was confused when, instead of brightening, his older brother's face turned sad and a little tired.

Sam's confusion only deepened when he listened from his bed as Dean and Dad fought. He heard Dad yell "No" and "stupid teacher" and "not celebrating that day! Ever!"

Sam rolled over and pulled his pillow over his exposed ear. Hot tears fell onto the sheet and he didn't even try to stop them.

Dad didn't even want to try to celebrate Sam's half birthday.

As he lay there in confused pain, Sam realised that there must be something very wrong with him. A normal father would want to celebrate his son turning six months older if it meant that much to the kid.

Sam's dad didn't.

So, Sam figured he had to be some sort of awful freak.
