Summary: Selina intends to steal a necklace, but stealing Vicki's heart turns out to be far more appealing.


“You’re Selina Kyle.” No surprise in that voice, like Selina’s been expected. The speaker’s blonde, leggy, ridiculously gorgeous. She’s also familiar.

“Clearly my reputation precedes me.” There’s a sharp edge to Selina’s smile as she extends a hand. “I don’t believe I’ve had the pleasure.”

The woman nods, takes Selina’s hand. Her handshake is firm, her skin soft. Selina’s in love with her white trench coat. “I’m Vicki Vale.”

Ah, that explains the familiarity. Selina’s mind helpfully brings up a memory of a black-and-white photo in a well-thumbed issue of Vogue. “The photographer?” Selina tilts her head towards the museum’s grand hall. “You’re working right now?”

Vicki still hasn’t let go of her hand. “No, looking for you, actually.” She shrugs her shoulders gently, finally lets her fingers slip free so she can shove her hands in the pockets of that stunning coat. “Bruce had a suspicion you’d show.”

Not Batman. Bruce. Interesting. It’s no surprise Bruce has figured out Selina’s alive, no surprise he’s been keeping tabs on her. It is a surprise that he’s been sharing Selina’s history with this woman.

A memory clicks in Selina’s mind. “Ah, that Vicki.” The one that gave Bruce that faraway look in his eyes - Vicki the photojournalist, the great lost love. Now Selina’s seen Vicki face-to-face, she’s starting to understand why he’d have trouble getting over her. “He has a thing for blondes, I guess.”

Vicki smiles, tucks her hair behind her ear. “Well, he has a thing for breaking their hearts, at least.” She doesn’t sound annoyed or sad. She sounds fond, if anything.

Selina knows that feeling all too well. Bruce should be the easiest man in the world to hate, but instead he’s the hardest.

She steps closer, inhaling the subtle scent of Vicki’s perfume, enjoying the way Vicki leans towards her, almost close enough to taste. “Just for the record, I broke his heart.”

Vicki gives her look that’s wry, knowing, heated. “I can believe that.” She tilts her head, breath tickling over Selina’s jaw. “He asked me to look for you. He doesn’t want you making any mistakes you’ll regret.”

Sweet, really, that Bruce would send Vicki after her. Patronising, but sweet. He can’t leave Gotham, after all, has tied himself too deeply to the city. Selina left as soon as she could, and she’s not looked back since.

She reaches forward, settles a palm against Vicki’s waist. “I don’t think I’ll have any regrets with the way this night is going.” Her hand slips lower, squeezes Vicki’s hip. “Will you?”

Vicki really is beautiful, and the cat in Selina has an eye for pretty things.

Warm fingers slide over Selina’s wrist, Vicki’s gaze fixated on Selina’s lips. “No, I don’t think I will.”

There’s a priceless necklace on display at the museum, one made of diamond encrusted claws. Selina had meant to make it hers, but she leaves the museum arm-in-arm with Vicki instead, and knows she’s picked the right prize.
