Title: Coffee Cake and Cress

Length: 500 words

Summary: In which Nosy is missing and bets are placed.
Author's notes:Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] badly_knitted for her kind permission to use Nosy and its verse. I can only hope I have not disappointed.

“Blue.”

“Yellow.”

“Red.”

“Pink and purple stripes.”

Something was going on. Because it sounded like they were placing bets on something, but Ianto couldn’t for the life of him work out what.

“Black with polka dots.”

He stepped up into the main Hub to find the whole team, including Rhys gathered.

“Orange and pink,” Meriel piped up, much to Jack’s horror. Not that Ianto felt that Jack had a leg to stand on with his pink and purple striped whatever-it-was.

“Do I even want to know?” he asked weakly as he collapsed beside his husband.

“Nosy’s missing,” Tosh said. She had yet to proffer an opinion that Ianto had heard. “They all think it’s off giving birth again.”

Ianto had actually seen Nosy earlier that day, slithering down into a quiet section of the archives that it knew it wouldn’t be bothered in. He had shown it to Nosy and Dizzy when the children were very small in case it ever needed a break from grabby hands and fur-tugging. But it had been a long time since Nosy had taken to that sanctuary – the children were well-past knowing that the Fluffs didn’t like rough handling. Indeed, Dizzy was draped over Anwen and Meriel like a massive black and purple scarf, humming contentedly as they fed it dried fruit pieces.

“Cress and coffee cake, wasn’t it?” Ianto asked with a groan. “For an infant Fluff?”

“Got some in the fridge already,” Owen said proudly. “Popped out to Sainsbury’s earlier.”

.oOo.

So they were all prepared when Nosy appeared some time later, with baby Fluff the colour of a red Setter. It was plopped carefully on Rhys’ lap, who cooed over it, enthralled. Not least because there were tenners heading his way from the betting pool (and a ten pence from Meriel). Upon closer inspection, it was discovered their newest addition had a ridge of fur that ran in a ridge along what served for its spine, sticking up, and no smoothing would make it lie in line with the rest of the baby’s fur.

“Hey, look at that!” Rhys exclaimed as Nosy went about feeding its latest offspring. “It’s a proper Welsh dragon! We should call it Draig.”

“Daisy,” Anwen countered.

“But, love, it looks like…” Rhys trailed off as he realised that Anwen was wearing that look that Gwen sometimes got; the stubborn one, the one that said there was no arguing with her. Nevertheless, he bravely gave it one last attempt: “But daisies are white.”

Anwen pointedly looked at the bobbles in Meriel’s hair, and Ianto realised this was suddenly going to be all his fault. Never mind how much he had tried to convince his daughter that the red flowers were gerberas, not daisies, like Gwen’s resolute Look, five-year-old logic was not to be argued with.

Rhys sighed in defeat. “Alright, my lamb: Daisy it is.”

But they all knew he would continue to call his little Welsh dragon ‘Draig’, but only in the privacy of his own head.

AwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwI

Welcome, Daisy Flufflet! Or Draig, as the case may be ;)

Nosy is getting quite adventurous with its custome-designed Flufflets! I guess it must have decided that Gwen, having sucessfully raised a human child, was finally mature enough to trust with raising a Flufflet. After all, it doesn't trust just anyone with its babies. Rhys will make an excellent foster dad though. With three Fluffs around, the Hub will be chaos!

Lovely! Thank you =)

I'm so glad you like it :D

I meant to stick to the name you suggested, but I got a bit muddled somehow and ended up with Daisy instead.

You're right: after Anwen, Nosy thought that Gwyn was a good mother, and she loves both it and Dizzy, so she and Rhys would be ideal foster parents for their very own Flufflet. I suspect Rhys more so than Gwen, tbhtbh - he is so patient and loving, and he will probably spoil his little Draig rotten

It's impossible NOT to spoil a Fluff!

They'll just have to call the Flufflet Daisy Draig, lol!

No worries, Nosy will give the flufflet I was thinking of to someone else, possibly Andy if he ever finds someone to settle down with. Nosy obviously thought Rhys would prefer red. It takes great care in creating the right flufflet for the right couple. For fluffs, designer babies come naturally. Mature Fluffs can change colour, but the babies can't, so the parent has to pick a suitable starter colour, either for camouflage or to make it stand out for safety reasons. Around the Hub, you want to be able to see where your flufflet is so no one steps on it. Draig should be safe from any such accidents!

I got it from rugby initially - the fact that of course Rhys would have gotten little rugby shirts to dress Anwen in when she was little, so red was a definite. As for the ridge, I was thinking of the gorgeous Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs for that one, only Fluff-shaped instead. Just to make our newest Flufflet a little more Welsh ;)

I do love how much thought you have put into Fluff biology, and their colouring.

My imagination has kind of gone into overdrive with the Fluffs, lol!

Now I'm having to do something similar with all the new species Ianto is encountering in Through Time and Space. It's rather daunting, he's met several sentient races so far.

I like Draig's 'crest' it makes for an unusual little flufflet and might look like a mohawk when ig grows up and its fluff gets longer. I think they start out with short fluff, like baby long-haired guinea pigs, and the fur gets longer as the get older.

Draig might keep his fur a bit shorter - his crest might flop if he gets long-haired! Rhys might be tempted to gel it into place...

If the crest fluff is a bit coarser than the rest, it should stand up on its own, like the bristles of a brush, lol!

I do like a bit of fluff occasionally, and this grabbed me and wrapped me up in its lovely, soft coils yesterday and wouldn't let go. I can't tell you how glad I was when I got the go-ahead from [livejournal.com profile] badly_knitted for me to have a play. I just had this red dragon Fluff in my head and I knew Rhys would adore it.
