He understands the science behind it.

It’s a chemical reaction affected by the fluctuation of a hormonal balance, which occurs when his skin touches hers. It’s nothing more, nothing less.

He doesn’t doubt the science or the effect, but he cannot help but question it.

Because, all it takes is her smile. One smile, and he smiles himself. Her tears make him angry, reckless. Her fear causes him to do things he would never consider doing before because success wasn’t probable.

And her touch, no matter how much he prepares for it, it shocks him. The jolt he experiences is addictive. He finds himself craving it, craving her, and it is unlike anything he has ever experienced before.

He doesn’t understand it.

It’s distracting and maddening. A puzzle he is yet to figure out.

But, when she kisses him, the slight touch of her lips against his, the tiny upward motion of her smile as she presses against him, makes him forget about the inconsistencies that science is yet to teach him.

He doesn’t understand what she means to him, and sometimes, he realises, he just doesn’t care.

Instead, he sighs softly, he smiles sincerely, and he kisses her back.
