The first time she made him angry, he pushed her. They were three years old and she had taken his toy so she could play with it. Her brother didn’t want to share, he never did.

But, that changed as their mother yelled and screamed and passed out again and again. Jesus shared everything with her; after all, they only had each other.

The second time she made him angry, he yelled at her. She cringed as she gave back the toy their second foster family had given them. It wasn’t something he was playing with, anyway. He forgot about it, and played with other things, but he never wanted for her to have it, anyway.

The third time she made him angry, it wasn’t really her fault. Their foster father had struck her across her cheek, and Jesus hit him back. They were pulled away from the home and were forced to move again.

He snapped at her, when she tried to talk, blaming her for taking his toy again, when she shouldn’t have. The toy belonged to the social worker, who gave it to him, not her. But she clutched it tight and refused to give it to him, anyway.

The fourth time she made him angry, it was the start of something else. Stef and Lena were nice, and they gave them so much. But, Jesus had this one toy she always wanted and he never shared it with her, even though the Fosters asked him to.

She heard him as he pulled and yanked things, looking for the teddy bear that their mother had given him once, a long time ago, as she clutched it to her chest and burrowed deeper into bed.

When he finally found it and tried to take it away, she cried, and he let go only to shake his head and walk away.

The fifth time she made him angry, it wasn’t the fifth time, or at least, she never counted what should have been their fifth, or sixth or seventh. And he wasn’t as angry as she thought he would be.

The knock on her door was soft as he traipsed in and practically fell on her bed, alongside her.

“You know I can’t leave without that.”

She clutched the wad of thick paper to her chest and shook her head. “I made a mistake, you don’t have to leave.”

“I know that,” he said, as he turned so his head was on her pillow and he could face her. “You told me to go.”

She rolled her eyes. “You choose now to listen to me?”

His chuckle was soft as he pulled her close and wrapped his arms around her. “I’m going to miss you, you know.”

“You better,” she snorted into his chest. “And flattery will get you nowhere. I’m not giving you your registration documents.”

“Fine. Keep it.” He shrugged. “Stef made copies months ago, anyway.”

Her eyes widening, she pulled away from him, managing to sit up before her mask broke and she burst into tears. “You’ll come back, won’t you?”

He eyed her in confusion as he followed her movement, his brows furrowing. “I don’t know why you even have to ask me that. You know I’ll never leave you behind.”

She hugged him hard, her tears breaking into a small laugh. “Shouldn’t you be going?”

“In a minute,” Jesus said, as he tightened his arms around her and buried his face in her shoulder. “I can go in a minute.”
