Title: An Arithmetical Investigation
Fandom: Torchwood
Author: [livejournal.com profile] badly_knitted
Characters: Jack, Tosh, Ianto, Rhys, Gwen, Owen. Mentions PC Andy and Detective Swanson.
Rating: G
Spoilers: Nada.
Summary: Something is happening to the residents of Cardiff and Team Torchwood need to come up with a plan.
Word Count: 410
Content Notes: None needed.
Written For: Challenge #110: Arithmetic.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters, except for Nosy.
A/N: Silly idea, I just tried to fit in as many basic mathematical terms as I could.

All the members of Team Torchwood were sat around the boardroom table eating Chinese takeaway. Jack looked from one familiar face to another, frowning. They were facing a particularly difficult problem and so far no solution had presented itself.

“Something doesn’t add up,” he said, scratching his head, deep in thought. “We must be missing some elementary data. Either that or there are variables we haven’t taken into consideration. So far we’ve come up with a big fat zero.”

Tosh shook her head. “I’ve been over everything from A to Z; there are no common denominators between the victims that I can deduce, they were all completely average before they were affected. I can’t even isolate any factors that might give us insight into who would be prime candidate to become the next victim.”

“I think we should divide into pairs and look at the situation from different angles,” Ianto put in. “That way we’ll be multiplying our effectiveness, in addition to covering a larger area than we can as a unit.”

Jack nodded. “Good plan. Right now we have an infinite number of potential victims and there’s only six of us.” He nodded towards Rhys, who was helping the team. “We can only canvas a small percentage of the city’s population at a time. Gwen, I think it’s time to get the police involved. We’ll divide the city into quadrants; have Andy and Detective Swanson take one, while our three teams of two take the others. Divide and conquer! We’ll cover the ground in a fraction of the time. Tosh, can you work out which sectors have the most victims?”

“That part’s simple. By my calculations, the greatest concentrations are around Splott and Grangetown, then Cathays and Tremorfa.”

“Good. Ianto and I will take Splott. Tosh, you and Owen head out to Grangetown. Gwen, could you call Detective Swanson and ask for assistance? Have her dispatch teams of uniformed officers throughout the city, and ask if she and Andy would mind taking the Tremorfa district. Then you and Rhys head out to Cathays.” Jack clapped his hands together. “Right, team, to sum this up; we just need to find the right angle for our investigation, and then I’m sure we’ll find the solution. Let’s get to work.”

As the team started to file out of the boardroom, Jack called out one final instruction. “Guys? Be careful out there, okay? None of us want to end up minus our hair.”

The End

Hahaha bet you're glad to get that over and done with! I have an idea but I can't write it until I get home!

You never realise how many mathematical wordsmith can put in one piece! I'm so rubbish that mine will probably fall face first into poo!

Love it :) x

*grins* Glad you liked it! I had fun seeing how I could word things so it sounded mathematical!

hank you. Good luck with yours!

Toughest challenge ever! (Although the new one at [livejournal.com profile] dw100 runs a close second.)

I know I have no idea for that one... So I just fill in ones that have already been haha! Also I found two lists with 100 prompts! I'm gonna use one list to continue the one I wrote for your prompt and the other for a story I'm starting! AMAZING :D

There are prompts everywhere - how did I ever write without them?

Don't even ask! I have no idea how I wrote without them! It's so much easier because a word or a sentence can explode so many ideas... They awakened my dormant bunnies haha

Prompts must be like caffeine to bunnies, make them hyper!

Yeah only problem is the clever good bunnies always end up being pulled into the wild, weird bunnies and then whatever happens to fill a prompt... It's a strange thing haha

Sounds like most of your bunnies are feral. Mine are fairly tame and mostly do as they're told ;)

You can have some of mine if you'd like! Teach them some manners *laughs* silly buggers teaching the good ones bad habits and manners haha!

Yep, bunnies can be a problem, you just have to train them, takes time, lol!

Tell me about it! I am sure they'll be tamed at some point haha! Well the weird wild ones that is! The clever good ones are... Well clever and good hahaha

Oi! I have a bone to pick with you *raises eyebrows* livejournal have alerted me and has told me it is your birthday...? Is this true? If it is I am sad! Very sad because you should have said 😂 and I would have said it earlier!

'Tis true, I'm a year older than I was yesterday. Sorry, I've been kind of distracted with mum in hospital. My birthday didn't seem important, under the circumstances. I'm alone, it's raining and I'm mostly feeling as gloomy as the weather.

Thank you *hugs*

Can't seem to find my party spirit *sigh*

How is everything with your mum? Also happy birthday love! I know the feeling about the rain and the cold :( I've been driving my dad's car up and down the drive today ha!

*hugs* everyone deserves a happy birthday :) x

Still don't know much, they're waiting to do an MRI, don't know when it'll happen because they have to fit her in. She might have had another stroke, they just don't know.

So, here I am, alone, doing laundry because what's the point of leaving it for tomorrow? Might as well do it now.

Thank you *hugs*

Practice makes perfect, you need to be able to drive in all weathers.

Oh I'm sorry *sigh* that must be awful not knowing ANYTHING that's happening with her. I guess that's a fair enough point *nods*

Yeah but my dad's a lot calmer than my mum and he's lucky to have basically a mile long drive so yeah I just drive to the bottom and then off we go to do whatever it is we were gonna do! It's fun, but where I live with my mum the most I could do is go round the little bit we live in!

I should really sit and do some writing! I've done five mock theory tests with my dad and have to look over stuff tonight so I have free time now do write! Finally!!

It's tough, makes it hard to be cheerful. I'll try to do some writing later, for now I want to post a drabble.

Have fun writing.

I wrote another worm drabble, and a bit more on one of my unfinished FAKE fics, then read a bit, and bought a couple of crystals off ebay. Got some birthday money, so thought I might as well get something nice.

Brilliant :) I never got anything written yesterday in the end! Both me and my dad ended up not doing what we were going to do! Ha! Best get some done today though :D

Yeah of course! Everyone deserves to get/have something nice on their birthday! My mum bought me a pandora bracelet for Christmas just gone! She has to get me the smallest one because the one she bought hangs off because my wrists to small XD

Crystals are lovely.

I'm another one with really thin wrists, took after my mum in that, hers were very thin too, but not weak like mine.

It's hard thinking about mum in the past tense. I don't like it.

She paid for some crystals I bought as my birthday present, but she never got to see them. I bought them just a few hours before she was taken to hospital, and she never came home again. I thought she'd be home by my birthday.

It's going to be hard and that's such a shame that she never got to see them. Crystals are beautiful. It must have been hard for you on your birthday, not knowing what was happening with your mum and how she was.

*hugs tightly* I'm so sorry for your loss though and I really am.

Thank you. It was quite fun to write, trying to fit in as many mathematical terms as I could come up with.
