Summary: After Fingon's death, Maedhros' brothers try to convince him the battle wasn't a disaster, with the exception of Caranthir.



“Nelyo-” Maglor began, biting his lip.

“No.” Maedhros never lifted his eyes from the page. “I am fine, I do not need anything, and I am not planning on leaving my work at any time soon.”

“You should,” Caranthir said from behind his brother. “We haven’t spent time with you in days. And we all know why you’re doing this.”

Maedhros didn’t look up at the sounds of the twins and Celegorm scuffling to pull Caranthir out of the room, or Cananthir planting his feet against a chair to keep himself in there. “Oh?”

Celegorm threw his arm around his brother’s face. Caranthir just ducked lower. “You’re doing this because you blame yourself for Fingon’s death. And yes, it was a disaster.”

Curufin and Maglor looked at each other, as the twins and Celegorm renewed their efforts to pull their brother out of the door.

Caranthir continued as Celegorm picked up his feet to throw him out the door. “But it also wasn’t your fault. And yes, you’re going to sit there and pretend everything is fine and throw yourself into your work because you think you can avoid another one. But you can’t, because Morgoth is there and we are cursed. So you should come spend time with us, and enjoy what we have, because Fingon wouldn’t have wanted you to just sit-”

Celegorm finally threw Caranthir out the door and shut it with a smile. “Where were we?”

Maedhros finally looked up. “We were at the point where you children leave and let the sole adult here do his work.”

They frowned, but opened the door to leave anyways.

When they were all outside, Maedhros looked out at them. “And now that I can concentrate, I will finish this and join you all for supper.”

He ignored the cries of success from his brothers, and returned to reading Gil-galad’s letter.
