Finarfin choose to stay. It was at once the hardest decision and the easiest one he had ever made. His children were gone, lost to whatever ruin they would face, but they would be back one day, and he still had his mother and his wife.

He ignored the whisper in his head that yes, yes, they’ll come back, changed or broken, no longer the elves they were when they left.

It was harder to ignore when Aegnor refused to leave the Halls of his own choice, and Galadriel only returned when she finally refused to take the ring, and his remaining sons returned bitter and jaded.

Fingolfin chose to leave, because he wanted to keep his family and people safe. He choose to fight Morgoth because at the time there seemed to be nothing else to do. His second son and daughter were lost to him, gone to found a refuge, his youngest was dead, leaving only the oldest – and Fingon had Maedhros.

There was no reason to stay, not after all the losses. Fingon’s voice echoed on the wind behind him, until his son finally quieted and let him go, watching over the plain.

He refused to think about how after being left along by his other children, he left Fingon alone.
