Francesco got out of bed and stretched with a yawn, still half-asleep. He rubbed his eyes and heard a soft sound from the kitchen, like a spoon tapping against a cup. He moved slowly, almost hesitant, and stopped in the doorway.

Viola was there, her back to him, making breakfast for the two of them. The morning light somehow made her even more beautiful, and he stood there watching her, holding his breath without realizing it.

He couldn’t help wondering if any of this was real or if he was just dreaming that a woman like Viola could fall in love with a stubborn idiot like him. He had sworn he’d never fall in love, and now…

He walked up to her quietly, still barefoot, and brushed a light kiss against her neck.

“Morning, love,” he murmured, voice rough.

Viola smiled without turning. “Sleep well?”

“With you, always.”

Francesco closed his eyes for a moment and wondered, once again, why he had fought so hard against the idea of a steady relationship. Ever since she arrived, Viola had only made his life more beautiful, fuller. Real. And by giving up the fight, he had let himself fall madly in love.
