“Francesco, there you are,” Viola said, stepping onto the terrace with her laptop. “There’s an avalanche alert.”

He crossed his arms, amused. “In Palermo? In the middle of summer?”

Viola laughed. “A metaphorical avalanche—of votes. In less than forty‑eight hours you’re already leading Sicilia Web News’ poll for the most desirable bachelor in Palermo.”

Francesco ran a hand through his hair, trying not to look too pleased. “Interesting. And… did you vote for me?”

“The Sicilia Web News staff can’t vote.”

Francesco moved closer, lowering his voice. “But if you could vote… who would you pick?”

Viola raised an eyebrow. “Votes are secret, inspector.”

He gave her a crooked smile. “Sure, but this is just a metaphorical vote, right?”

“You don’t need my vote,” she teased. “The poll closes in five days, but at this rate… you’ve basically already won.”

“And what exactly do I win?” he asked, wetting his lips.

“The title of ‘most desirable bachelor in Palermo,’ obviously. Plus a photo-shoot and an interview with Sicilia Web News.” Viola couldn’t help smiling at the thought of Francesco on a set.

He brushed her hand lightly, winking. “Well… maybe in the interview I should specify that even if I’m still a bachelor, my heart is already taken.”

Viola bit her lip, suddenly nervous. “And break the hearts of all the women who voted for you so devotedly?”

He leaned in to whisper against her ear. “The only vote I care about is yours, Viola. You know that.”
