His daughter’s tablet isn’t in the family shrine. It can’t be; Jiang Li isn’t dead.

Instead, there is a woman who wears her name, who lives outside the capital. Her children call him ‘grandfather,’ to his great joy. It’s also a knife in his heart, a punishment they both know he deserves.

He travels every year on her birthday, to that bewildering house where their unspoken secrets lie bare. The world sees their celebration; only he and she visit the tiny shrine with his daughter’s name. Incense rises with his fervent prayers: some day, perhaps, she will grant him forgiveness.
