Challenge: #430 - Looking Back

The six-hour drive from San Francisco to the area formerly known as Sunnydale was almost over. Buffy stared outside the passenger window, where the car’s headlights cut into the dark desolation of the desert stretching on both sides of the road.
They were getting closer. She could already sense the old, familiar Hellmouth feeling, crawling all over her skin as they approached their destination. It had been ten years since the Hellmouth collapsed, swallowing Sunnydale with its heavy baggage of death and pain. But she remembered it all.
A maelstrom of thoughts and memories swarmed her mind, hitting her hard.

She hadn’t realized that she’d clenched her fists until she felt Spike’s hand slide over hers and rub soothing circles on her skin. Buffy took a deep breath and loosened her fist, turned her hand palm up, and laced her fingers with Spike’s.
He gave her hand a reassuring squeeze and flashed her a quick smile before returning his attention to the road.
Buffy felt the tension wash away and relaxed. They’d decided to take this trip together and they’d face it together. Standing above the crater, looking back on their crazy amazing journey, and looking forward to more adventures.
