You listen, silent, sitting beside him. This is something he needs. This great, racking expulsion of buried emotion. It needs to escape him, after that. You know he portrays himself as tough, as hard as 'kick them in the head', and he is all those things. But it isn't all of him. It isn't everything. He is also this, frightened and confused and so desperately sorry for what he did and what he couldn't. He weeps in apology and relief and you sit in the car with him. You don't speak. You listen. You weep with him. You forgive him.
