Summary: Ben explains his relationship with Brian somewhat.

People were always baffled that Ben and Brian had become friends over time. Especially with the hold Brian had over Michael in the beginning. So it wasn’t as if Melanie was shocking him.

“How can you do it, Ben? All these years of … his,” her hands were flying around quickly.

Ben was smiling. He knew what she meant. She didn’t even need to finish. But he let her. He let her remind him about how Brian had hurt him. How Brian had never given Michael what he wanted and let Michael trail around after him like a puppy dog. She pointed out how he wasn’t always the best friend that anyone could have, the way she viewed Michael had been to the other man.

Ben just listened.

He smiled.

He nodded.

He took a sip of his tea.

He waited for her to finish.

“There, I said it.” She crossed her arms. “I think you’re batshit crazy. I heard you guys had been even working out together in the mornings. Seriously, Ben?!”

When she paused long enough to take a drink and let him get a word in, Ben started. His voice was steady, it was calm, and it was gentle. “It’s a love triangle, basically.”

He quickly started to talk again, as he noticed Melanie’s eyes beginning to bulge.

“The three of us are a love triangle, simply put. Brian and Michael would have always been connected, Melanie. With me or without me. They were always going to be two points on a similar line. Those points need each other, to complete a line. And I would never have been able to break that line. I made an addition to it. I created another point on that line, on the other side of Michael, when we first met each other. And I couldn’t have been happier. But he was always being pulled. He was in the middle of these two points. And it wasn’t fair to him. And it wasn’t fair to me, to have to pull. To always be the opposite force of a…” he paused, searching for the right words. “Force of nature. If you can consider Brian a natural force,” He made himself chuckle slightly, pushed his glasses up and smiled at Mel.

“I still don’t get it. I’ve been dealing with this shit for longer than you. And you have to be all…” she was too flustered to get anything else out.

“Zen Ben?” He laughed softly before continuing with his explanation. “So to make it easier for Michael…for all of us…? It makes more sense to make it into a triangle. Michael will always be connected to Brian. That I’m not going to fight. But I could stop pulling him in a completely opposite direction. Which means, in essence, I will always be connected to Brian, if I always wanted to be connected to Michael as well. Which I do. Brian loves Michael. Whether he shows it in a way that we understand or not? He does. And he’s been there for the both of us for the last few years, Mel. He’s been there for you guys, as well. And for Gus, you know.”

She sighed heavily. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. You’ve been talking to Lindsay, haven’t you?” She felt scolded and defeated, because he was right.

“So we have a love triangle. And we both love Michael. And, truth be told? Brian’s growing on me, as well.”

Melanie rolled her eyes. “And now you’ve gone too far.”

Ben just continued to smile. She’d come around.

I love how you portray Ben here; how unselfish he is and how understanding and how he loves Michael enough to love Brian, too, in his way, understanding that Brian is a part of the man he loves. I thought Mel was super in character as well with her strong mindedness. They're a lovely contrast to one another and I think this piece really highlights why Ben and Michael are so solid together in comparison to Mel and Lindsay (not that I don't love them, too!).
