Once again, Buffy was left staring at Spike as his chip sent him into violent fits of unprovoked pain, leaving him crumpled on the stairs where he waited during her unfruitful phone call.
Once again, she was left watching, horrified, while he writhed in agony as a consequence to the Initiative’s sick use of science. She felt helpless, but also guilty; back then, she hadn’t given much thought to what those so-called scientists had done to Spike or other creatures. For a while, she’d even resented them for turning him into a harmless nuisance that she couldn’t even slay anymore.
But years had passed, things had changed.
They had changed. And she couldn’t bear the sight of Spike suffering through excruciating seizures when he was doing nothing to activate the stupid chip.
She knelt beside him, her hand barely brushing his shoulder, unsure if her touch would help or hurt. “We’ll figure this out. I promise,” she whispered, her voice trembling.
Spike looked up, his eyes glassy. He opened his mouth to speak, but another strangled wail of pain came out instead.
Buffy swallowed hard, cursing the people who did this to him in the name of their sick science.
