In her dream, Fangfei's life is peaceful. Her scholar-husband is doting; their children beautiful. She mourns her father and brother's deaths, but they do not shake her -– because in that life, she never knew she could save them.
In that life, she is kept like a shimmering koi in a carefully tended pond, delicate and blind to anything beyond the water's surface. Her husband's sheltered prize.
When she wakes, fighting the covers for air, it's a long time before she can sleep again. Her husband's betrayal had been so absolute; she hadn't imagined there could be worse fates than murder.
