Marcus had joined the Rangers to finish what his brother had started. When he’d made the decision, he’d had no great belief himself, but he’d owed his brother; it had seemed a way to atone for not being the brother he should have been, and so he’d taken William’s place, out of guilt more than anything.

But along the way he’d found a greater purpose than he’d ever imagined, something worth fighting for, something worth living for, even something worth dying for, if it should come to that. And he’d found something even more unexpected: Love.

Oh, it was a bit one-sided at present, but he was working on that, slowly, gradually, because some things shouldn’t be rushed, and anything worth having was worth taking time over. Susan wasn’t the kind of woman to be won easily; she had her own duties, her own loyalties, just as Marcus did, and she took them very seriously, which he respected. He admired her strength, her spirit, her pragmatism, the way she stood firm for what she believed in… She was also the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen, which only served to make Marcus more determined to prove himself to her.

He didn’t expect winning her heart to be easy, she was understandably wary, but he had no doubt that however long it took, when she eventually allowed him to court her as she deserved, his efforts would prove to have been worthwhile.

There was no rush, there was a great deal going on right now with the war against the Shadows about to begin in earnest. There’d be little time for romance in the coming months, but Marcus found that he didn’t mind. He would be satisfied to serve alongside Susan, until the war was over, and then… Time would tell.

The End
